Frequently Asked Questions
➣What is UNUM?
UNUM is the new name for NSIN's Defense Innovation Network platform. Join innovators from the defense, academic, and venture communities who are using UNUM to change the way national security innovation works.
➣What is NSIN?
The National Security Innovation Network (NSIN) mission is to "build networks of innovators that generate new solutions to national security problems." NSIN is headquartered in Arlington, VA, and has regional offices in 11 commercial innovation hubs throughout the United States. Through its headquarters, regional hubs, and embedded university partnerships, NSIN builds a national network of innovators and delivers programming that solves real-world, DoD problems through collaborative partnerships with non-traditional problem-solvers within the academic and early-stage venture communities.
➣What is this platform's purpose?
UNUM is a collaboration and networking platform that supports National Security problem-solving. Communities provide technology and problem focused contexts for the exchange of knowledge and expertise. Challenges and program-based collaborations provide opportunities to bring together those at the front-line of national security challenges with innovators who can advance the development of novel solutions. People are at the heart of it all so UNUM is building new networks of innovators among those who are and can be part of building the future of national security.
➣What can I do on this platform?
Comment on other members' ideas and innovations. This positive feedback loop helps identify and encourage the development of the most promising new solutions.
Follow other members of the platform. Grow your network by connecting with those outside your "home" community and benefit from the knowledge and experience of others.
Discover events and share your own. This is a great way to increase your reach and access to problem-solvers across the network.
➣I'm a student. Is there a way for me to use this platform to find an internship?
Yes. There are communities that have ongoing or iterative efforts to actively recruit multiple levels of employment and partnerships, including internships. Check out the Hirethon community to start your search.
➣Who are the participants I'm interacting with?
Any user you're able to engage with shares community membership with you.
To learn more about other members of the platform, click on their avatar to navigate to their profile.
➣How do I reach out to people on the platform?
You can message other members of communities you're part of by clicking on their profile and clicking 'Message'.
Tag other members of communities you're part of in contributions and comments to send them an in-app notification.
➣What are the community norms?
Communities can vary in their intended content categorization and member participation, but all follow these standards:
- To engage with content in any way (contributions, likes, comments, follows, etc.) or view the Members page within a community, you MUST be a member of that community.
- Highlights (large cards beneath the hero banner and above the Activity Space) are posted by community admins and can link to internal or external content.
- Contributions are submitted by members and can be edited by the author or the community admins.
- Events are posted by the community admins but can be engaged with by any member.
- Resources are posted by the community admins but can be engaged with by any member.
➣Can I see who views my post?
You can see the number of times your post has been viewed, but you cannot see a list of users who have opened your post.
Views are aggregated every time your post is opened, and are not limited to which user has opened it.
- In other words, if a single user opens a post 7 times, the view count will increase by 7.
➣I'm an entrepreneur. What are you doing to protect my intellectual property?
We will never sell your information to other entities, nor will your intellectual property be compromised. The site includes a EULA agreement that outlines the details, binding anyone who becomes a member to adhere to these guidelines.
➣Are there moderators?
Navigate to the Events or Resources area; authors of these posts are the admins of your community. Community admins are responsible for monitoring the content of their communities and should be contacted if members have concerns or questions.
Site wide admins are members of the platform's software development team and are responsible for building the communities in support of the community admins.
➣Can I set up my own community?
Yes, pending discussion and approval.
To request a community, you'll need to submit a form outlining the purpose and intended engagement you desire.
Upon receiving your request, a member of the software product team will reach out to you to learn more about your community and assess the feasibility for creating it.
➣I'm trying to find a post I liked before. What is the best way to find it?
You can see all posts you've liked by going to your profile and looking at 'MY LIKES' within the activity space.
If you did not click its 'like' or 'follow' button but want to find a post, you can use the search bar at the top of the site and narrow down results by community or challenge.
